Taste of Dartmouth
A new cookbook has been honoured with contributions from Joyce Molyneux – a catering industry legend – and her former colleague Tom Jaine, who have both given their time for free to raise funds for Dartmouth charity Dartmouth Caring.
Joyce and Tom ran the Carved Angel from 1974 onwards in Dartmouth, and its reputation spread far and wide. Joyce and Tom have supplied the foreword and introduction for the book, which is called ‘Taste of Dartmouth’.
The Carved Angel started the foodie craze in Britain and Dartmouth now features a large number of immensely well-regarded restaurants.
These include the Seahorse, run by Mitch Tonks, founder of Fishworks and a former Tatler Restaurateur of the Year (2006), and Angelique, run by Alan Murchison’s 10 by 8 Company.
‘Taste of Dartmouth’, produced by charity Dartmouth Caring with publisher Richard Webb, features 18 of the town’s best chefs and aims to bring in funds for the charity which helps the elderly and vulnerable adults.
The book is being released at this year’s Dartmouth Food Festival.
The book features three-course menus produced by acclaimed chefs: Mitch Tonks, Darren Brown, Terrence Conran-trained Serin Aubrey, David and Holly Jones of Manna from Devon, Tom Woods of Dart Marina Hotel, Shahar Laskor of Spice Bazaar, Helen Watts of Dart to Mouth, Adam Parnham of the Dartmouth Apprentice, Ben Handley of the Laughing Monk, Strete, James Brown of Browns Hotel, John Hodgson of Anabelle’s Kitchen, Richard Jenkins of the Royal Castle Hotel, Peter Shaw of Taylors, Paul Howard of Stoke Lodge Hotel, Roger Hawkshaw of the Normandy Arms, and Tom Stephens of Kendricks.
The book showcases the breadth and depth of talent in the restaurant community in Dartmouth, and even features recipes from Dartmouth Academy students and advice from Dartmouth’s Kitchen Shop owner Pat Candy on good cooking equipment.
Dartmouth is a ‘foodie’ haven and its strong community spirit is shown through the commitment of so many well-regarded chefs donating their recipes for free.
The beautiful book features black and white images of all the chefs by photographer Phil Scoble and food shots by established industry photographer Debbie Jones.
Dartmouth Caring Chairman Dee Nutt who came up with the idea of the recipe book with Dartmouth Food Festival Chairman David Jones, said: ‘We are so pleased that this book has turned out so well, especially with all the chefs donating menus free of charge. This is an affordable and highly impressive recipe book which will also raise important funds for Dartmouth Caring. Put it on your Christmas list!’
Dartmouth Caring is a charity set up to help and support the elderly and vulnerable in Dartmouth and its surrounding villages. The Charity started life as a simple transport bureau and then became a registered charity in November 1989.
It slowly started developing other services and now offers such diverse services as bereavement assistance, a counselling service, carer support, a ‘Memory Café’ to help those suffering dementia and Alzheimer’s, a VIP Club for Visually Impaired, a new Parkinson’s Cafe and offers general advice and assistance for vulnerable adults and their families when people are in difficulties.
The book costs just £4.99. For details, contact Dartmouth Caring on 01803 835384, or visit www.dartmouthcaring.co.uk. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Food Festival in the Market Square.
