Newcomen Engine House
The only original Newcomen engine that can be shown working is in the Engine House, Dartmouth.
One of the worlds most important and significant inventors, born in Dartmouth in 1664 Thomas Newcomen invented the world’s first steam engine in 1712. The engine was the catalyst that changed the world from man power to the modern day. His engines were used to pump out water throughout Cornwall’s tin mines and the Black Countries coal mines.
The Newcomen Engine is found adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre, Mayors Avenue, Dartmouth.
