Message from the Head Teacher:
I would like to welcome you and your child to Stoke Gabriel Primary School where they will benefit from the high educational standards and the warm, caring family atmosphere we provide in our village school.
We provide a balanced and broadly based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. The curriculum is adapted to cater for the needs of all children, ensuring no pupils are treated less favourably than others.
Children are taught that ours is a ‘thinking and caring school’. They are encouraged to share control over their own learning, to become more independent, thinking people. Teachers aim to employ appropriate teaching methods according to the activity or subject, providing a mixture of individual, group and class teaching with appropriate differentiation, setting work for children with different abilities. Teachers also aim to manage learning through a stimulating environment to teach the ten national curriculum subjects and religious education from the start of Year 1. (Parents are reminded that they can withdraw their children from all or part of religious education.)
Children also experience a varied programme of gymnastics, games, athletics, swimming and dance. All children receive swimming lessons at Totnes swimming pool. We have a well equipped hall for indoor P.E. and our own sports field for outdoor games. A number of sports, including traditional team sports are played at the school. We have a policy of equal opportunities and both boys and girls experience a wide range of activities including football, tag rugby, cricket, rounders, athletics, swimming, gymnastics and unihoc (hockey). We have successful after school sports clubs and participate in Totnes Learning Community sporting events throughout the year.
