Dartmouth is steeped in history, much of it maritime, from the early 12th century. It has featured in the Crusades, the pilgrimage of the founding fathers to America, the triangular trade with America and Europe and latterly it played an important role the Second World War.
Much of this history can be seen and learned from just a brief walk around this historic town.
Discover Dartmouth Guided History Tours offers a 1 to 1.5 hour walking tour of Dartmouth pointing out the most important buildings and places, all within a sensible walking distance.
Although there are believed to be over 10,000 steps in Dartmouth, we do not go up any, only down a few.
Your guide is Dartmouth's long standing and award-winning town crier, Les Ellis, accompanied by his wife and consort Liz. They will be dressed in their regalia.
Points of interest on the tour include:
The Butterwalk, The Pool plaque, John Hawley's bonded warehouse, the red light district at Silver Street, Brown's steps, Mills and Foss Street, Market and Courthouse, Anzac Street. St Saviours Square and the site of the the gaol, stocks and cucking stool at The Shambles. The Tudor House, The Cherub Pub (Dartmouth's oldest building), the houses of Thomas Newcomen and John Hawley, Bayard's Fort and Bayard's Cove, the Bayard's Cove Inn and the South Embankment.
The tour will start and finish at Dartmouth Museum on Dartmouth's Butterwalk.
The tour will be fun, informative and interactive. There will be time to stop, take photographs and ask questions.
