Head Teacher: Robert Owers
Message from the Head Teacher:
For over six decades Churston Ferrers Grammar School has effectively combined academic excellence with strong personal development and pastoral support. Our reputation is as strong as ever and was recognised in the two most recent Ofsted inspections which awarded the school outstanding grades in every single category.
This success has a simple foundation and it is one that I re-enforce with staff and students on a regular basis. I am a great advocate of excellence, but I am also a great advocate of equality and respect for others. We do not aspire to a single-sex public school ethos; we are a co-educational school for the most able students in the area, irrespective of social background.
Despite our relatively small size, the school punches well above its weight both academically and in extra-curricular pursuits. The school is consistently in the top 100 schools nationally for both GCSE and A Level results. In 2011 Churston was ranked third in the South West and 19 th nationally for the flagship English Baccalaureate results.
Given that we select on ability, this is perhaps not surprising. However we also have an enviable reputation for sporting excellence. The sporting facilities at the school are excellent and reflect the commitment to an all-round education; if a student leaves us at 18 with an outstanding set of academic results but cannot work in a team, lead others, show resilience or present themselves effectively then we have failed them.
We also recognise that the majority of our students will live and work outside the South West and many will work internationally. For this reason we have a strong international programme that includes foreign exchanges and established links with schools in seven countries, including a unique link with schools in Peru.
I have worked in a range of schools since 1987 including large comprehensives and highly selective single sex grammar schools. Several of them could boast academic results on a par with Churston, but none can compare with the relaxed and supportive atmosphere in which Churston students spend their formative years. Quite simply, it is a great place to go to school.
