About Us:
Blackawton Primary is a village school which is at the centre of the local community. We aim to enrich all our children’s learning with the many benefits this offers. There are strong parent links which foster a secure environment for the children to embark on their education.
We are also a school that looks out beyond the village to Dartmoor, the sea, Europe and links with a school in Ethiopia. All of these connections support our school ethos which places a high priority on an inspiring, flexible, relevant and creative curriculum for all children. We hope to equip them with both the academic tools for economic success and the social and emotional skills for happy lives. We want every child to feel empowered to ask questions, make mistakes and test ideas. We also want them to have fun!
The school has recently benefited from a partial rebuild which has resulted in a bright, exciting and flexible environment to suit all styles of teaching and learning. Modern technology combines with practical skills and physical activity to underpin our rich curriculum. We look to develop learning skills and independence through the experiences children have. We use visits and visitors to greatly enhance all aspects of the curriculum.
There is a strong ethos of using the outdoors to enrich learning. Staff at Blackawton are encouraged to ask the question, ‘why am I doing this indoors?’ To support this approach we are developing one of our fields to be our sixth ‘classroom’. This includes a poly tunnel and raised beds for each class, an ‘amphitheatre’ outdoor drama space, Forest School area its own shelter and eventually a complete straw bale classroom. We believe the learning at Blackawton should extend beyond walls of the building itself.
