Peter Wheatley - Dart River Officer
Peter Wheatley
What do you do?
I patrol the River Dart with two other teams as far as Totnes making sure everything is in order and providing help to others on the River when they need assistance or advice.
How long have you been doing this and what did you do before?
I used to work for HSBC as an area director for 12 years but started working for the Dart Harbour Authority part time after my retirement. This is my fourth year working for them now.
What is a typical day for you?
I usually start at 7.30am and have various rounds to do. I check the ‘Bite area’ to make sure noone has berthed on the private pontoons, I help find berthing for anyone who wants to stay in Dartmouth that haven’t already made any arrangements, I check the anchorage and generally help anyone who requires my services.
Have you always lived in Dartmouth?
I don’t actually live in Dartmouth I live in Lustleigh on Dartmoor. I was born In Kent, my previous job brought me here to Devon and have lived here for nearly 16 years now.
What do you do outside of work?
I love to sail, I have a Westerly 26 at Galmpton which is great to get out on. I also turn my hand to a bit of DIY about the house.
Do you enjoy your job?
Yeh, it a great community spirit working on the Dart, and satisfying helping people, they are always grateful for our advice and the service we provide.
What advice would you give people on the River?
Think of others on the River especially when its busy around the time of the Regatta as there may be boats with small children onboard. I would also stress that lifejackets are a must especially for children. Don’t underestimate the River it can be dangerous.
