Our parents say:"I never saw my child happier in a pre-school setting as I did at Southford. He was completely himself and so relaxed."
What we do
Every child that attends a preschool in this country will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. But not every child will have the experience that Dartmouth Pre-school can offer.
We have a strong belief that learning by doing is the natural and most effective way in which children can absorb the world around them and develop their social, physical and early academic skills in a safe and stimulating environment.
We really get to know our young charges very well and build strong relationships between home and school. This provides us, in turn, with the information we need to develop learning strategies to meet the needs of each individual child. We provide extra support and help to children and families where it is needed. We have a strong track record of catering for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and those with English as an additional language.
How we do it
Daily activities are set around the topic for the term, and are carefully designed to spark the children's interest and ignite their imagination. Southford Schoolrooms has recently undergone complete refurbishment and we now have a fabulous split level play room which offers the flexibility to create zoned areas where the children can role play doctors, dig for treasure in the sand, or choose some quiet time in the tent. Double doors lead to the balcony where the children can choose to play outside. We are very lucky to have a secret garden which is only accessible from the Pre-school, and which was completely redesigned alongside the building. Our pirate ship is a great favourite, and there's lots of space for bike riding and water play.
Ofsted says "Adults encourage children to progress in their learning and are confident enough to allow children genuine opportunities to direct the course of the session and take it in interesting directions on their own initiative."
Where children are allowed to be children and learning comes naturally
