Dartmouth Cricket Club - Newly Formed for 2010
Dartmouth & District Cricket Club was formed in December 2009 after some Dartmouth Pubs and Clubs played some informal Cricket games at Coronation Park during the summer last year, including a floodlit match at Dartmouth AFC Longcross Ground.
After five initial exhibition games with Cricket equipment kindly loaned by the BRNC, much interest spread around the town resulting in the historic beginning of the Club.
During 2010 an Inter-Pub 20Twenty league has been organised between 8 local teams within the District. These teams include Birssy’s Bar, Dartmouth Arms, Ship in Dock, Seale Arms, DAFC, The Castle Hotel, Market House Inn and The Royal Mail. These 20 over matches using a ‘semi-soft’ cricket ball will be played within the rules of the D&D.C Club constitution. In September, the finalists will be playing for the Steve Allen Trophy, a memorial trophy dedicated to a loyal England cricket fan who sadly passed away suddenly last year.
A full season’s fixture list has been finalised and the opening matches are being played on a new wicket at the renamed Coronation Park ‘Oval’. On Sunday 4th April, it’s Birssy’s Bar v The Royal Mail at 2pm and on Easter Monday 5th April, also at 2pm, the Seale Arms take on Dartmouth Football Club.
In celebration of the opening match, an after match disco party will take place at Birssy’s Bar on the Sunday, where Man of the Match will be announced at 9pm.
As well as the informal league, the committee organisers are running a players league alongside in the hope of recruiting a Dartmouth 1st XI to challenge other existing Cricket Clubs in the South Hams.
Winter training has been taking place at Dartmouth Leisure Centre every Friday at 6pm; all those who are interested in playing in the league are welcome to join us for batting, bowling and fielding practice in the nets. £2 per training session. As well as Players, the club are also keen to source umpires and scorers to act as officials during this first season.
After successful fundraising in the form of a meat raffle and picture quiz, and with the kind help of club sponsors Chris Moseley Builders, The Compass Office Shop, The Seale Arms, Pillars News agency, Mr Dan Callard and Birssy’s Bar, new cricket equipment and a cylinder mower for the upkeep of the wicket have been purchased for the exciting new season. Local Graphic designer Nicolas Shillabeer has commissioned a brand new Dartmouth & District Cricket Club Crest to be emblazoned on Team shirts throughout the year.
The Club are now keen to enrol their new members in readiness for the upcoming season, membership will be paid in a ‘Pay and Play’ format, £2 each occasion members play or practise. Play or Clubs teams have paid a one off annual subscription to cover costs of Public Liability Insurance whilst playing on the park.
