About the ship:
Kaskelot was built in Denmark in 1948 by the renowned J Ring Andersen shipyard. She was commissioned by the Royal Greenland Trading Company and used to supply remote areas of Greenland until the 1960’s. After this she became a fisheries support vessel in the Faroe Islands.
The Danish word ‘Kaskelot’ translates as ‘Sperm whale’. She is a heavily built vessel, with two layers of oak planking for extra strength and rigidity. Each plank is over three inches thick.
J Ring-Andersen have built nearly 200 wooden sailing vessels since they were founded in 1867 and they are well known for crafting stout, seaworthy ships built to withstand the cold and windy conditions of Northern Europe.
Kaskelot was sold to Square Sail in 1981 and completely re-rigged to start her new career as sail training vessel, come-movie star. With her home base as Charlestown Harbour in Cornwall, Kaskelot sailed all over the world training young seafarers, along with starring in many Hollywood movies.
Kaskelot was sold again in 2013 and given a new lease of life through an extensive refit. All her masts and spars were unshipped and refurbished or replaced, she was stripped down to a bare hull with many planks, frames and stanchions being repaired or replaced.
