AS A CELEBRATION OF IAN PHILLIPS TIME AS A TRUSTEE AT THE FLAVEL, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO BE SHOWING 2 OF HIS FILMS BACK TO BACK
Evacuation
2014 was the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings and as part of the celebrations we are offering another chance to see this film featuring local people produced and directed by Ian Phillips.
What three thousand local people didn't know when they were given the shattering news that they were to be evacuated from their homes within six weeks, was that the training was for D Day. They had to leave before Christmas and take all their possessions and livestock with them. Slapton Sands was to be used as a practice landing beach by American troops and it would not be safe for people to remain in their homes. This historic event would herald the end of The Second World War.
With rare footage made available by the Dartmouth Museum, old photographs from the Blackawton and Strete History Group and new interviews filmed in recent months, this gripping story of what it means to leave everything behind, will be remembered.
The Flavel acknowledges the generosity and support of the Slapton Line Partnership which is part funded by the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group, incorporating funding from the EU, Defra and LEADER.
We also thank BASH and the Dartmouth Museum who have also provided invaluable resources.
Dartmouth 1945
How did Dartmouth look at the end of the 2nd World War? What damage had the town and residents suffered? How was local morale as the town was rebuilt?
Following the expansion and development of the previous sixty years there were numerous repairs to be made and the post war development began. This fascinating film is made by local film producer Ian Phillips and will follow some of those changes by hearing tales remembered by Dartmouth people. There will be countless images of the way Dartmouth looked then and now.
All proceeds will go towards the continuing work of Flavel Arts Centre.
