The Dartmouth Trust is a long-established local charity whose work has a significant impact on the fabric of Dartmouth life. The Trust’s purpose is to administer and manage a portfolio of investments and share the income amongst its three beneficiaries.
Dartmouth has benefited from a number of bequests dating back in cases from as early as the 17th Century. The Dartmouth Charities were formed in 1890, to create a body to manage charitable bequests for the benefit of all the townspeople. In 1988 the charities' name was changed by the Charity Commissioners to The Dartmouth Trust.
The Dartmouth Trust is managed by a Board of voluntary Trustees with the assistance of an administrator. Trustees comply with the Charities' Acts and meet Charity Commission requirements.
Because of the generosity of these bequests, the Dartmouth Trust has been able to generate a substantial income which has been, and is, applied for charitable purposes over its life. The surplus income at the end of each financial year is given according to its Scheme to three local charities:
- Dartmouth United Charities
- The Ecclesiastical Charity
- The Public Purposes Charity
