The best…Dining in Dartmouth
Dartmouth is, it’s fair to say, a bit of a foodie haven. Ever since the arrival of Joyce Molyneux and the Carved Angel in the 1970s, Dartmouth has offered something a bit different for food lovers.
Now there is a plethora of good places to eat, suiting every taste and every pocket. The town’s Annual Food Festival in October has gained an enviable reputation over the last decade for being the ‘best small food festival in the country’ and the town’s eateries have taken this prestigious event and let it inspire them to even greater heights.
Some of the highlights are worth checking out below…
The Seahorse
This restaurant, started by award winning restaurateur Mitch Tonks in 2008, has become something of a food mecca for those visiting the town. Its stunning menu, relaxed surroundings and great service have been praised by everyone from Valentine Warner to the very hard to impress Giles Coren, and last year the seafood specialist won ‘Best Restaurant’ at the Observer Food Monthly Awards. It's a must-visit on any food lover’s visit to Dartmouth. www.seahorserestaurant.co.uk
Bayards Cove Inn
Housed in the oldest building in Dartmouth, the Bayards Cove Inn has the perfect ambience to set off a relaxed break in the most beautiful town in the South West. With a décor that is sensitive to the needs of its users whilst embracing its heritage, friendly staff and tapas to die for in the evening, this is a great night out. www.bayardscoveinn.co.uk
Sails Restaurant
Sails is housed above the Dartmouth Yacht Club (go in the front door and continue past the entrance to the bar, the door is on your right, go up the stairs and voilá). Its position - raised above the South Embankment - gives it the most spectacular view in Dartmouth. The food and the service are wonderful too: a mix of modern, internationally inspired dishes tempt your palate and with that view you can’t go wrong. www.sailsdartmouth.co.uk
Taylors Restaurant
Housed above the Boat Float, Taylors is a bit of a hidden gem: comfortable surroundings, a fantastic view with food that is divine. The service is top notch and the ambience is very chilled: perfect for a relaxing night out with friends or family. www.taylorsrestaurant.co.uk/
Dart Marina
On the north end of the Embankment, next to the Higher Ferry, is a high-class and beautifully realised riverside venue for a restaurant. Dart Marina has a long track record for good food and is continuing to find success thanks to a recent revamp. The food is brilliant and the service excellent. It even has parking!
