Children’s Hospice South West was founded in 1991 by Eddie and Jill Farwell after they experienced the urgent need for hospice care for children in the South West. Their two eldest children had life-limiting illnesses and they had to travel over four hours, from their home in North Devon to Helen House in Oxford, then the country’s only children’s hospice.
In 1995 Little Bridge House, the South West’s first children’s hospice opened its doors to families from across the South West. The hospice very quickly became oversubscribed, leading to the opening of the charity’s second hospice, Charlton Farm, Somerset, in 2007.
Little Harbour, our third hospice overlooking St Austell Bay in Cornwall, welcomed its first families through the doors in in December 2011 following our Precious Lives Appeal which raised £5 million.
We have now completed our chain of 3 children’s hospices to cover the whole of the South West, meaning that no family has to travel for more than about 1½ hours to reach one.
Our Dartmouth & District Friends Group meets once every month, usually first Tuesdays at the Sportsman’s Arms, to organise events locally to raise money and awareness for this vital charity.
Volunteers are always most welcome - any help, however little or infrequent, is very much appreciated – just give us a call for a chat and for meeting dates/venues.
