The Society seeks to conserve and enhance the distinctive character of the area covered by the historic town of Dartmouth, the villages of Blackawton, Dittisham, Kingswear, Stoke Fleming and Strete, the River Dart and the neighbouring coastline and countryside. It recognises that it must reconcile this activity with the need for a viable local economy. In particular, the Society aims to:
- Promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting the area.
- Secure the preservation, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest.
- Raise awareness of the history, architecture, geography and natural history of the area through publications and talks during the autumn and winter.
- Promote the enjoyment of the area’s special character by residents and visitors.
Membership is open to all who share these interests. If you would like to join the Society, please use the application form available from The Flavel or contact any of the named officers below. Your interest will be most welcome.
Annual subscriptions: Adults £7.00 – Couples £12.00 – Juniors £2.00
The Society’s Committee carries out much of the Society’s business. It meets monthly throughout the year, monitoring all Planning Applications, considering developments relevant to the Society’s concerns, and planning events that will further its aims, for example talks, excursions and social events. It welcomes contributions from members, and communicates regularly with them by email and letter, as well as through its website and meetings, which are open to members and non-members alike and are normally held in The Flavel.
The Committee maintains close contact with other organisations and authorities, such as Devon County Council, South Hams District Council, Dartmouth Town Council and the villages’ Parish Councils, Dartmouth Harbour & Navigation Authority (DHNA), Dartmouth Business Development Forum, South Devon AONB.
Each year, the society makes donations to support the projects of other local organisations working to enhance the area in different ways, and the Society’s web site www.dandksociety.org.uk provides links to other, related web sites.
