Baxters Gallery’s Spring exhibition - 'Body of Work'
Baxters Gallery’s Spring exhibition Body of Work will show a variety of mediums depicting figures whether human, animal, fish or feathered. “I’m really excited at the impressive mix of artists that are exhibiting and I am looking forward to seeing the “bodies” represented in so many different ways” enthused Sarah Duggan owner of Baxters
Wood is widely represented by Jane Ryan’s collectible and charming “OPI” automata – mechanical toys for grown ups made from beautiful reclaimed woods, Lynn Muir’s much sought after, humorous and wonderful figures hewn from driftwood collected from her beach with tongue firmly in cheek and Kathryn O’Kell’s beautifully carved, bird wall panels made from English hard woods – she works directly on the wood which responds to the carving as it develops.
Sarah Saunders will be showing her simple, light-hearted, figurative slab built, ceramic heads using a range of stains, slips and under glazes to build up colour and enhance the texture whilst Karen James will be showing her fleshpots – hand built 3d sculptural pleasingly plump and succulent, curvaceous ceramic nudes. Kate Glanville will have a range of decorated domestic pottery with brightly painted seaside themed figures that are sure to make you smile.
Clare Cutts’ beautiful and calm screenprints, some of which incorporate laser cutting, are always in demand in the gallery and this show will see the launch of some brand new editions. Aliisa Hyslop’s intricately painted small figurative oils have a stillness that always draw you in to the characters she depicts with a mix of joy and melancholy. Newcomer to the gallery is local artist Janet Mitchell who creates grid collages from discarded fragments with imagery found in such things as trade logos, postage stamps, admission tickets or sweet wrappers and are reminiscent of a collector’s album or board game.
Quirky resin Jewellery from Ellymental which are meticulously hand crafted pieces depicting many figure types and added text detail shows her fervent interest in kitsch nostalgia. Finally, Elvis the Kat will be showing nostalgic decoupaged pieces, some “body” shaped such as a male mannequin covered in old Beano comics, some featuring figures on functional retro furniture.
