Animal Magic at Baxters Art Gallery
Baxters in Foss Street, Dartmouth is launching a mixed exhibition showcasing eight artists from October 25th – November 14th. All work will feature animals or birds across a range of original prints, collage, stained glass and ceramic and includes established gallery artists and those new to showing in Devon.
The show sees the welcome return to the gallery of Catherine Rayner who produces beautifully detailed varied edition screenprints of hares, hedgehogs and other creatures. Catherine has won several awards for her work and for her illustrated children’s books. Richard Spare achieves a dreamlike quality in his drypoint etchings with simple yet very appealing subject matter. He is a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and we are thrilled to be showing his work here. Dartmouth’s Simon Hart will be showing a new collection of animal and bird mixed media collages in the show. Using mark-making, mono-print, stamping and painting, Simon has drawn on his breadth of techniques to create a charming collection. A favourite in the gallery for many years, Helen Fay has a collection of black and white etchings including many new images of dogs which are literally hot off the press. These will show alongside a collection of her popular penguin original prints.
Simon Griffiths will be sculpting a new collection of his hand-built stoneware birds for the show some of which will be mounted on reclaimed wood. His work is becoming increasingly collectable and he is invited to exhibit at far more galleries than he can supply. You’ll have to be quick to get a piece! Stuart Low has been showing his monoprinted glass panels in Baxters this year and has created some stained glass panels for us for this show. As well as working with galleries, Stuart works on many public commissions for hospitals and churches as well as with architects on private house features. Katherine Winfrey produces slip decorated domestic ceramics and we will have a wide range of shapes which are oven and dishwasher proof. She has learnt much of her craft in France and is therefore greatly influenced by French pottery, old and contemporary, handmade and manufactured.
Finally, we are excited to be showing the work of Shirley Vauvelle who creates wall hung or freestanding sculptures, using white earthenware to hand build flower components, small creatures, birds and fish. Texture is embossed into the surface and under-glazes and oxides are then applied to give layers of colour. These are then assembled together with driftwood, wire, reclaimed maps, vintage magazines and other interesting finds from the local beaches.
The private view is Friday October 25th 6 – 9pm and the exhibition can also be seen online at www.baxtersgallery.co.uk The exhibition launch co-incides with Dartmouth galleries week when most of the Dartmouth galleries host a private view on the same evening.
