Nick Shepherd - Dartmouth at Night
As a photographer, you may ask which month I prefer. Although all beautiful in their own way, I would opt for a November evening. For it is a time to stop and stare…a time to think…a time to experiment. Above all it is a time to really appreciate what we have and to focus on all that is going around you. It is a time to see Dartmouth in a new light.
JULY 6.00pm: You are walking along the South Embankment. Families excitedly draw up their crab lines in eager anticipation and yachts unfurl their sails as they set out to sea for an evening adventure. Kingswear basks in a golden light and rowers enthusiastically practise for their next regatta.
NOVEMBER 6.00pm: You watch the full moon break cover from Long Wood and the floodlit castle provides an eerie outline of St Petrox Church. Commuters, not visitors, now attract the eye as they clamber on and off the ferries eager to get home. Illuminated empty restaurants await their first patrons and autumn leaves swirl around the Royal Avenue Gardens. A sense of order and calm prevails as twinkling lights reflect in a tranquil River Dart.
